Renewable energy and issues of energy efficiency and the environment

For the past 20 years, the ALTEN programme has promoted cooperation in energy fields with a view to deepening knowledge of the current state of R&D in the sector and thereby facilitate mutual understanding and effective collaboration between the EU and Japan.

The Centre's current ALTEN activities include:
- commissioning reports on energy sources or on energy-related issues (see below);
- attending or organising seminars on energy issues;
- maintaining links with energy experts, associations, etc. in the EU and following developments in EU    energy policy;
- organising occasional missions for Japanese experts to visit EU energy companies, regulators or other    energy experts or vice versa; and,
- answering inquiries about the energy sector in the other region.

The focus of the ALTEN activities has evolved over time in response to changing priorities. Energy efficiency is very much a current priority - as much for government as for industry: The EU and Japanese Authorities are committed to cooperating on this and other energy issues. Business leaders from both sides have also recognised the importance of energy efficiency. This is why our newest report on energy-related issues focuses on the relative energy efficiency of consumer appliances in the EU and Japan (2007).
